Radiotherapy for Melanoma

Skin/Soft tissue melanoma lesions and radiobiology

Radiobiologically, melanoma appears to have unique characteristics, primarily a tendency to respond more favorably to radiotherapy regimens that use large doses per treatment (hypofractionated radiotherapy) (13, 14, 15). To complicate this analysis though, the RTOG randomized trial showed no difference in the response rate of metastatic melanoma lesions to hypofractionated radiotherapy versus conventionally fractionated radiotherapy, with a response rate of approximately 60% for each tested regimen in patients with soft tissue lesions (16).
